All students eligible for enrollment in a North Carolina public school are eligible for enrollment at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School. Applications for the following school year will become available each year by January 15th at the school and on-line. You may print off an application, pick an application up at the school or call the office at 252-567-2779 for one to be mailed to you. The deadline for receiving applications at the school will be April 30th. Please note this is a receipt deadline. Applications may be dropped off at the office, in the school’s mailbox outside, or mailed back. All eligible students who submit a registration application for admission to the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School by the April 30th deadline will be admitted, unless the number of applicants for a grade level exceeds the number of openings at that grade level. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of openings, a lottery will be held to determine admission, and a wait list will be created, if necessary. The lottery containing applications received by April 30th will be held the second Thursday in June at 5pm.
If an opening comes available during the first twenty days of the school year, the opening is awarded to the child next in line of the waiting list for that grade, as determined by the lottery or the application received by date, if received after lottery has already taken place. If there is no waiting list for the grade, the student is accepted. Students will not be accepted into Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School after the first twenty days of school has passed.
In compliance with Federal Law, the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School administers all education programs, employment activities, and admissions without discrimination against any person on the basis of gender, race, color, religion, national origin, age or disability.
Special Cases for enrollment preference are listed below in the order of preference given:
Staff Member Preference: Children of full time Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School staff will be given preference for enrollment when space is available. When no slots are available or when there are more full time staff children than space available, there will be a “staff” lottery for that grade level.
Siblings enrolling at different times: Siblings of currently enrolled students at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School will receive preference for enrollment when space is available. When no slots are available or when there are more siblings than space available, there will be a sibling lottery for that grade level. The law defines siblings and includes any of the following who reside in the same household: half siblings, stepsiblings, and children residing in a family foster home.
Opportunity Preference: Any former student enrolled at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School within the last two academic years but left due to an academic study abroad program, competitive admission residential program, or vocational opportunities of the parents will receive enrollment preference.
Legacy Preference: Siblings of students that completed the twelfth grade at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School can receive sibling preference as described in paragraph above.
Other Special Cases for enrollment preference are listed below with no order of preference given:
*Multiple birth siblings: Multiple birth siblings are resolved in the statute by the inclusion of one surname in the lottery. If multiple birth siblings are in different grade, the parent will select the grade level to place the name. All Multiple birth siblings shall be admitted if the surname is drawn.
*Siblings enrolling at the same time: Families will have the option of entering one surname into the lottery for all siblings applying at the same time; if that name is drawn for a space available then all children are admitted when space is available. Siblings not receiving a space will be placed at the top of the wait list after existing siblings. The law defines sibling to include “half siblings, stepsiblings, and children residing in a family foster home.
